Dance Capsules

As part of the Legacy Plan, the Cunningham Dance Foundation has conceptualized dynamic “Dance Capsules” to preserve as many Cunningham works for posterity as possible. These digital packages will assemble in uniform and stable digital form the array of creative elements that comprise each choreographic work, enabling works to be studied and performed in perpetuity with knowledge of how they originally came to life. Upon the closure of the Cunningham Dance Foundation, all Dance Capsules will be transferred to the Merce Cunningham Trust, established by Cunningham in 2000 as the successor organization to the Foundation to hold and administer all rights to his work.

Dance Capsules will include performance videos, sound recordings, lighting plots, décor images, costume designs, and production notes from rehearsal and performance periods, as well as information drawn from interviews with dancers and artistic staff.

Patricia Lent, a former dancer with extensive knowledge of Cunningham’s work and experiencing in reviving works, is working directly with Assistant to the Choreographer Robert Swinston and a select group of dancers from each decade to identify repertory pieces for preservation. Initial research recommends prioritizing approximately 50 of Merce Cunningham’s more than 200 works for preservation in Dance Capsule format. These works represent the entire span of MCDC history from the 1950s to the present and include masterpieces such as Ocean (1994), Summerspace (1958) and BIPED (1999).
